Essex: Joseph MOSS, Born c1840 probably Romford
« on: Friday 19 August 16 11:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,

According to his August 1861 Springfield Gaol records Joseph MOSS named his father, James MOSS, as his next-of-kin, living at Collier Row, White Hart Lane, ROMFORD, Essex, but no indication of his age.   Joseph MOSS at this stage had been sentenced on 03/07/1861 to Penal Servitude for 6 years and consequently spent time at Millbank, Dartmoor and finally Millbank from where he was released on licence 19/07/1866 stating his destination was "P/A, London" ???

Can anyone help tracing either of these two gentlemen through the Census or similar indexes please?   Sadly, I have failed!!

For the moment and thank you,

BAC3

Thank you Suz and Suffolk*Sue

It looks as though some of the "mystery" has been solved, at least up to the 1861 Census for Joseph, alias Josiah, and the father James to 1871 and his death in the next 10 years.   My knowledge of Essex is so poor, Romford, Halstead, Great Bardfield, Little Maplestead and so on, I become confused, although that is gradually becoming a state of mind with many and increasing "senior moments"!!

But Joseph, Joseph wherefore art thou Joseph ??? ???  That is the question.   Apologies to the Bard.

For now,

Tony

If it is of any interest James Moss married Harriet Theobald 04/12/1827 at Gestingthorpe.
