Hello All
Thanks dobfarm for those emails, getting the feeling that there were Hoods in most Yorks Parishes. Thinking of going to Newcastle (or pay Archives to do a few checks), but feeling cynical.
George Hood, is simply a 'loose cannon' rolling around in Selby, who has left no clue, in anything found so far. Something makes us believe C of E and yet also non-conformist. Perhaps, he changed religion, like the weather.
All a Big MysteryGeorge Hood died "at Selby" 18 September 1845 aged 60 yrs, Tanner & Brewer. Three newspapers Yorkshire Gazette; York Herald and The Leeds Intelligencer (say 63 yrs).
However 28 years old in 1815 (Marriage), so likely 58 to 59 years (in his 60th year).
Sarah Hood "Widow of George HOOD Tanner", died 11 Gowthorpe, Selby 28 November 1879, aged 86 yrs, baptised at Selby.
Their adult children:-
Richard Hood Grocer, died Market Place, Selby 2 May 1850, aged 23 yrs (Sheffield and Rotherham Independent; York Herald; Hull Advertiser; Hull Packet; Leeds Mercury and Leeds Intelligencer - newspapers 23/ 24 yrs)
Sarah Hood died Selby 22 September 1853, aged 18 years;
Mary Hood died Selby 24 November 1854, aged 34 years;
Ellen Hood died Selby 27 July 1855, aged 23 years.
Regarding Parish Churchyards, it would seem even when closed, if one parent was buried in the churchyard, the spouse and unmarried adult children could be buried there too.
Died before 1851 Census
No Child baptisms with a Desent
No suggestion in Marriage Allegation and Bond, only that George Hood appeared to be from the Peculiar jurisdiction of Selby and Chester Newby of the same place, Miller, was Bondsman.
No Brewing Excise Applications survive for 1820s WYAS (George Hood became a Retail Brewer about 1825/1826)
No Apprenticeship found to date
Not Registered at Coopers Hall
No Overseer of the Poor records for 1838, the year George Hood was elected
No accident at George Hood's Tannery or Brewery premises, or apparent business dispute in newspapers.
No Court dispute found to date involving George Hood Sen'r being in dispute, giving his father.
No suggestion of George's origin in property Deed Registrations
No request for place of burial in Probate Bundle
Hood sons were Admitted to Manor of Selby (late Thomas Gouldsbrough's Copyhold property), no help in Gouldsbrough's Will, seems the Hood sons settled the late Gouldsbrough's Mortgage and paid the widow, what had already been paid off mortgage.
No Gibson Bankruptcy File and Bankruptcy Registers leave no hint, even who the Creditors were.
A Mr Hood apparently in Selby Land Tax from at least 1781, likely to be John Hood as he appears as an Occupier when a house of John Spencer in Millgate was sold in 1802.
James Cockin, Witness at the Selby July 1815 Marriage. James Cockin name seems to be Thorne, to Doncaster area. Cockin at Luddington Lincs, Blacktoft etc., see the Jane Cockin thread, Signature on original Marriage reads James Cockin.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=747759.0What we know is that George Hood left up to £1500 in 1845, plus some property at Gowthorpe and Wren Lane, Selby (Tannery - Gowthorpe with Engine House and three dwellings, yards and workshops, Malt Kilns at Gowthorpe and Wren Lane), with dwelling and Yard Wren Lane.
G. H. had also acquired a substantial amount of property in Ousegate in 1838, mostly transferred immediately from George Hood to James Collinson (suggesting George Hood provided the money as a Mortgagor and James Collinson was Mortgagee) and which William Hood (his Son) was a Trustee on Collinson's Will (possibly until a repayment was satisfied) and was still a Trustee when William Hood the Trustee later ordered that Widow Collinson's Ousegate properties be sold. When it seems, they passed to another Collinson. James Collinson's Will, only seems to refer to William Hood as a Trustee, but its a long Will.
Jonathan Hutchinson features in G.H. Will and a John Adams seems to be mentioned when widow Sarah Hood offers the Tannery for sale.
Thanks for all your efforts, from you Rootschat stalwarts.
Regards Mark
