Thanks Carol for your links to John Mckirdy and Champion of the seas......you found some information that I had not seen before.   The posting of John Mckirdy on "find a grave" is one of the memorials that I created...I am glad to see that it can be found with a search.

Good evening,

The yards are braced as far round as they go so the wind is coming from beyond the ship towards the photographer. Not a very efficient sailing position hence steam up as well to assist the wind. Makes more sense of the flag and smoke direction.

If the wind was from behind the yards would be almost square across the ship.

The flags may give a clue.

I don't think so?!

They appear to be artist's impression of flags?
The pennant on the main mast doesn't appear to be attached.
And, of course, the flags are flying the wrong way?! ;)

(If the wind is filling the sails, and therefore blowing left to right; then the flags would also be flying left to right?)
. In that case, how do you explain the direction of the smoke?
Artistic Licence perhaps?

It is an artistic interpretation of a vessel of the times as no photographic image would be available.

Just to be pedantic, you are assuming that all the air is moving in one direction.

If you stand on the deck of a sailing ship with full sail and you face forward

then a current of air will hit you in the face. The air moving over the deck of a ship

will be quite strong but the air from behind the ship filling the sails could be a lot

weaker. That is why the sails are so large.  i.e.  P.S.I.   Same applies to the flags.

The air moving over the top of the masts is a lot stronger due to the speed of the

ship . This is my reasoning and may be a load of absolute ..........  err rubbish ;D ;D ;D

Is there any one who is a sailor that can throw light on the subject. ;D ;D ;D ;D

It comes from my experience of barbecues where the wind is strong at my back

    but the smoke from the fire blows straight into my face. :o :o :o :o ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D

( nothing to do with sailing of course )

Sorry but my eyes are running due to the onions cooking around my beef burghers.

...and I thought it was based your experience of the of dynamics kite flying in your youff  ;D ;D
Your reasoning impressed me of little education in wind direction and it's impact...says she reaching for the Ga***con ;D

" and I thought it was based your experience of the of dynamics kite flying in your youff  ;D ;D"

We couldn't afford such luxuries when I was young. We used to throw sheets of newspaper

into the air. That's where I learned about currents, that and buns. ;D

Back to ships. Many ships would be altered during their working life to suit different

        conditions, so pictures may differ.
