Finnegan, Drumcree
« on: Monday 22 August 16 14:23 BST (UK) »
Very new to Irish research, so any help would be most appreciated. Looking for connections (on behalf of my dtr-in-law) to a Henry Finnegan, possibly born c.1848 Drumcree.

He married in 1869 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, but may have returned to Armagh as the birth registration of his first child Squire John Henry Finnegan takes place in Armagh in 1869.

marriage details - 17 JAN 1869 Henry Finnegan/21/bach/Farmer/Drumcree/John Finnegan/Farmer m Frances Ellen Louise Bryar/21/spinster/Cambridge St, Charlton cum Medlock/Squire Bryar/Foreman Tailor.

We do have a possible registration of death for Squire Bryar 4Q 1879 Lurgan, so it is possible that both families were resident at one time.

Thanks, yes I had managed to find him also on the indexes - I think the family must have come to England shortly afterwards, as Joshua William Alexander Finnegan was baptised in 1872 at St Peter's, Liverpool.

The death record is available to view (including digitised image) via GRONI online for 5 credits, currently £2.50, it is held under 'Squire Bryan', who died on 31 October 1879 with a reported age of 60:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

Edited to add: a comtemporary death notice corroborates the reported age of 60 and states the address as 'Adelaide Terrace, Lurgan'.

BTW, a Harriett Bryar was the informant for the births of both Louis John Henry Finnegan and Joshua William Alexander Finnegan.

The address given at the birth of Louis John Henry Finnegan was the townland of Mullantine in the civil parish of Drumcree.  Might be nothing, but note the following will:

The Will of John Finnegan late of Mullentine County Armagh Farmer deceased who died 27 June 1866 at same place was proved at Armagh by the oath of John Finnegan of Mullentine (Portadown) aforesaid Farmer one of the Executors.

http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

The digitised image of the will goes on to describe sons Benjamin and Henry and several other members of the family, Benjamin and a sister Matilda married Cregans, a sister Emily married a Charles Babe, etc. etc.

Just worth noting until in a position to rule in or out.

Gaffy, have been looking at this Will, there is also a sale (Belfast News-Letter) of one of the properties mentioned within the Will in 1897 by a John Finnegan who is retiring from farming - no connection to him found as yet.

Looking at registered deaths that may match the date given within the Will info - died 27 JUN 1866, I cannot find a death registered within the Armagh district, but I'm not at all aux fait with Irish registration or geography.

I agree that this Will for John Finnegan c.1866 needs to be explored, and it must be noted that Henry Finnegan is described as a farmer at the time of his marriage.

You do note birth of "Louis John Henry Finnegan" rather than Squire John Henry Finnegan are we talking about the same person b.abt 1848 and is this from records available on-line?

Many Thanks, odessa

What I've seen must be a mistranscription, it is the same person (Henry's son born 1869, not 1848), GRONI online has the birth records for both sons indexed as:

- Squire Finnegan born 22 April 1869, mother's maiden name Bryan;
- Josua Finnegan born 13 April 1870, mother's maiden name Bryar.

To view the records, use the link as above at reply #3.
