Barwick on Lees
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 21:54 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am yet again trying to knock down the brick wall re my 3xGtGrandfather Joseph Mitchell  he was born about 1798. According to the 1871c RG10 4967/124/6 he came from Barwick on Lees but 1851 & 1861c both show Berwick on Tweed. I am inclined towards Barwick on Lees as he married Elizabeth (from Newby) @ Kirby cum Broughton and possibly the enumerators on earlier census had not heard of Barwick but had Berwick on Tweed.

My question is what Church(es) would have been close to Barwick on Lees and where would I find the parish registers (I have looked at Berwick)

thanks
Judith

I'm not finding anything called Barwick on Lees?
Neither can I find a River Lees?

Are you sure that's what it says?

I suspect that the river is Tees, not Lees - based on other entries on the page.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Ah! :D

So that would be Ingelby Barwick, Stockton-on-Tees?

GenUKI says:
"INGLEBY BARWICK, in the parish of Stainton, wapentake and liberty of Langbargh; 2¼ miles WSW. of Stainton, 3 miles NNE. of Yarm. Population, 175."

The church would be St. Peter & St. Paul, Stainton.

Parish records at:
Cleveland Archives
IGI (so, FamilySearch)
(see: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/NRY/Stainton.html)

Thank you Both

I did wonder whether it could be Barwick on Tees. I would love a trip to Cleveland Archives but, as I live in Gloucestershire, it certainly won't be in 2016 I will therefore do a look-up request and hope it results in this particular brick wall being knocked down.

Thanks again for your input  :)

Hi

There is a baptism in the Yorkshire Bts 2 Feb 1800  for Joseph Mitchell son of Mary Mitchell spinster Barwick. The index says Thornaby but the image has the Parish of Stainton in Cleveland at the top of the page.

Thank you William

I saw your response after posting my request for look-up. I did wonder whether he was illegitimate. Would you be able to send me link to this record? I didn't realise Yorkshire BTs online where can I find them?
I can't quite believe that I may have finally found him  :) :) :)
Thank you this is very much appreciated. I'm going on holiday tomorrow so this is a good way to start

Hi Judith

The Yorkshire Bts are on FindMyPast. As I said in their index it says Thornaby but once you have accessed the image you should be able to scroll through those that are there for Stainton in Cleveland.
