I'v just been doing my homework and my aunt the oldest out of her and my mum was born 24th May 1914, my grandparents married Dec 1913....so obviously had to.  My mum was born Oct 1919, so unless there where children who had passed away in between-non were ever mentioned by my mum/aunt, and non came after...it maybe a case of he just upped and left.

It could be they had to get married young, then he went off to fight in WW1. He returned and your Mum was born, but they then decided they couldn't live together. You don't know how WW1 affected him. Have you got your Mum's birth certificate, what does it say on that?

My grandma was 26 when she got pregnant/married. My mums birth certificate gives his name and occupation warehouse driver.  I'll have to do some more digging,  yes no what you mean re war, my dad signed up when he was 17-lied about his age, fought through world war 2 and came home after the war was over...it had it's affect on him, and I know how to press a pair of trousers with a razor sharp crease and polish shoes/boots till they gleam  :)

There's a newspaper article (Yorkshire post and Leeds intelligence, 10 Mar 1922) in which a Richard Barry age 43 of Wallace St, New Wortley pleaded guilty to stealing about 14lbs of ham from his employers and was jailed for 2 weeks.

Since this gives New Wortley as the address, I wonder if it was him?

Ooooooh i'll check this out Annie, thank you.  I'v managed to get hold of my grandmas death certificate (1958) and it says on there that she is the wife/widow....so seems he left or she got rid of him.  If this is him, she was a church goer, didn't drink-signed the pledge etc, so if he got in trouble it's possible she got rid.  No aristocrats, royalty or millionaires in my ancestors ha ha x

The employers concerned were Leigh Lineham and co (Ltd) which turns out to have been a warehouse, which would ft with your grandfather's occupation on his marriage cert.

I checked Annie and it is him. My cousin who is 10yr older than me said" it all fits, the old devil". My mum barely remembered him-she was only 4 at the time.  So looks as though he did a disappearing act-wonder where he got too!!!!.
Thanks again for your help-first bit of info iv been able to get re him.

I had a look on the usual resources and can't see him after this date. He could have changed his name, emigrated---

But at least now you know that he was alive in 1922, and there's a clearer idea of his year of birth to aid searches.

A few more details to add to the picture

Electoral roll for Arnley 1920, 21 & 22;
5 Wallace Street
Barry, Mary Jane
Barry, Richard

After 1922 it seems Mary Jane is on her own.

Absent Voters list 1918 West Leeds
5 Wallace Street
Barry, Richard - 2nd South Staffs. Regt.

There only appears to be one medal card for a Richard Barry in the South Staffs regiment.  Private 41846 awarded Victory & British medals.
