Craven family from Nova Scotia to Mass.
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 17:37 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am new to geneology and just beginning my search of my Craven family from Nova Scotia, CA.  I am unable to find my great grand father's birth certificate.  My grandfather was Orlando Joseph Craven born around 1870.  I am also searching for Orlando Joseph and Mary MCSweeney both born in Nova Scotia but relocated to the Chiccoppee and Springfield, MA areas.  I'm also searching for a Honora and William MCSweeney.  William would have been Honora's uncle.  I'm particularly looking for Honora's death certificate.  Orlando's daughter's were Evelyn, Catherine and Lena Craven, all born in MA.  Any help would be appreciated.

Warmly,

Pam W.

There should be all sorts of information on the family but to look for many N.S. records a location will be needed.
Here are a few possible U.S. records for Orlando Joseph Craven-
1900- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9R2-NBL (born March 1871)
1910- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPBT-ZB4
1920- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVMB-H74
1930- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4RD-4MK

He's Joseph O. Craven on birth certificates for these two daughters-

A possible 1891 census record (born c1871) in Kentville, Kings Co.-

Civil registration of births in Nova Scotia began in 1864, continued to 1877, then lapsed until 1908, when the province resumed record-keeping. Registrations for 1864-1877 are incomplete.
Since 1 October 1908 the records have been maintained without interruption.

Looks like Kentville could be the right place. U.S. Social Security records show birth as 14 Mar.1871 Kentville No.
Marriage to Mary McSweeney gives parents as William Craven & Lydia Loveless & birthplace as Kentville.

1891 census- William Craven (55, widower, born England, Baptist, stone mason), Gorden Craven (24, farmer), James Craven (22, harness maker), Orlander Craven (20, harness maker), Susan Craven (18, tailoress), May Craven (16), Maud Craven (14, dressmaker), son Burpee Craven (12).

Father William was Charles William Craven according to son Gordon Elwin's birth record- 20 May 1867 Corwallis, Kings Co.

Charles William Craven, 63, widower, born Windsor (1891 birth in England probably incorrect), parents John & Mary A., m.29 Sept.1900 at Kentville to Mary E.W. Reid, age 56, widow. His residence given as and occupation carpenter.

Orlando's brother Charles W. married in 1884 and another brother Scott married 1886.

Have a look at Family Search & N.S. Vital Archives for lots more!

=================

Honora is mentioned as still alive in her sister Helen's obit in 1953. (see below)

======

Honora's brother William died Friday 16 Nov. 1962  and Honora is listed as still alive.( See Link )

Can't post copy of the obit, names living people.

==============

So it appears Honora is still alive and living in Halifax as of Nov. 1962.
