1909 SOMERSET? COUNTRY LANE New Inn Public House UK LOCATION help, please
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 09:32 BST (UK) »
Hello!

Any ideas please as to the location of this

1909 SOMERSET? COUNTRY LANE New Inn Public House

The pub sign I'm sure reads NEW INN in a semi circle. Postally used with WELLS/Som (Somerset) postmark.

With thanks~001uk

Maybe the New Inn at Backwell

http://www.thenewinnatbackwell.co.uk/menus.html

Thanks stevew101. Hmm, not sure about Backwell. The inn is not positioned right for the road.Next to the pub is a Car Park and on the map no road runs along the end of the building. (Pls see screen shot) I KNOW this is not a Golden Rule but in many occasions (especially with full photo cards) the pmk is not far from the location (proved wrong here on my Hampstead card tho')!

In any event this view does look very "Mendipish"

Could I just say that the fact that the postcard was posted in Somerset doesn't necessarily mean that the scene in the picture was in Somerset, as tentatively suggested in your subject line?

Hi JenB
I agree (as I pointed out in my text regarding my previous listing of Hampstead). However, it does remind of the Mendip area. I thought initially Priddy.

Not that it's of any use in identifying the location, but there appears to be a Union Jack attached to the post on the left and are there also some flags slung across the road?  :-\

It could be  May Day  or Empire Day or  Whit walks in which everyone  marches around the town?

Yes indeed, decorated poles holding a line of flags/bunting. (But I mustn't add my obs)!!

However, two ladies at left look as though they're holding money collection boxes and behind the band (members of which are in uniform) there ate raised banners further down the parade which look like they spell words.Incidentally the cap badges could be a clue, they're quite distinctive.

I have a book with a photograph of Wedmore, from about that time, and there is a similar line of bunting across the road with Wedmore Brass Band. There was a New Inn in Panborough.
