Military Ornament Maker
« on: Friday 16 September 16 11:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I have been researching one of my ancestors, (who lived in Walsall, Staffordhsire) that in 1861 and 1871 recorded his occupation as a Military Ornament Maker. I have tried endlessly to find information on this particular occupation, and drawing a blank.
Id really love to learn some more about it, so was hoping perhaps someone on here may know a little bit about it. I would be grateful for any insight :)

There was an ornamenter, aka embosser; a press hand who operated a power press which produced a raised design or ornamentation on metal articles. This could be cap badges, buttons etc. for military uniforms.

From the OED Ornament An accessory or adjunct, primarily functional, but often also fancy or decorative; (in pl.) equipment, trappings, furniture, attire. Obsolete.

Thank you both for the above info, in comparison with other family member occupations, it has been hard one to track down with any specific information! :)
