Hopefully the right family in 1891

John Garforth 29 yrs
Martha A Garforth 26 yrs
Eliza Garforth 9 yrs
John Garforth 8 yrs
Florence Garforth 5 yrs
Joseph Garforth   3 yrs
Harry Garforth 11 months

I can't see the children in 1901 except that there is an Eliza Garforth 18 yrs boarding with a Charles and Betty Dean.

This record shows a sister, Florence Heath, as mentioned above by CB53

In 1939 Joseph gave his birth date as 1889 and Dorothy as 18th July 1898

Possible matches for Dorothy?

There is a registration in 1897, which is a year out, although this not uncommon in 1939.

This appears to be Joseph Garforth in 1901:

Joseph Garforth b 24 May 1886 England lodger immig 1898
Herbert H Smith b 1877 Ontario farmer
address :
Pipestone, Brandon, Manitoba
( can't download the link at mo)

There is a full , 54 page, Service record for Joseph Garforth, aka John Joseph Garforth , giving the above address and stating born Ashton under Lyme , available to download free here:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=410159

Throughout the record it gives his next of kin as Mrs Annie Garforth of 50 Park Road, Tame Valley , Dunkinfield, Cheshire. Perhaps that's why we can't find a marriage to Dorothy ? EDIT : forgot the crucial word "wife " !

Assuming that Dorothy Alice Carter is the person in the 1901 census, three of her siblings are also in Croydon in 1939 - Janet (then Hadfield), Sidney and Dorcas.

The Garforth family were going to 13 Salisbury Road Croydon in 1937. This matches the address for Sidney & Dorcas Carter in later records so I think you have the right family there.

Baptism :

Dorothy Alice Carter 17 Oct 1897 Icklesham St Nicholas ; John Carter labourer and Annie
Dorcas Ruth baptised same day and noted as aged 2

John and Annie Carter , whilst living in Sussex , were both born in Dorset. A possible marriage:

John Carter 23 labourer , father Richard
Annie Maria Paul 23 , father William        both of Blandford
20 Sep 1880 Blandford Forum

A birth certificate for one of the children would confirm if this is correct.

Her brother claims their mother was born in Addington, but which Addington and where I'm not sure (the only Addington I know is in Kent).  I hazard a guess, that back in the 1880s, people were still marrying locally, and the world was not such a globalised place, so I found on freeBMD a Dorothy Carter born in Warrington March 1887.

I've just spotted that Annie Maria Carter and family are living at New Cottages ,ADDINGTON Surrey after the death of her husband . So it is Addington , Surrey.
