Thanks CB53 - that looks the best so far with father's address a farm. Must be him, there can't be two John Henry Bertie Gardners I wouldn't have thought. I'll see if I can follow that one up. Could easily be if he moved soon after he was born, he didn't know he was registered in Dulverton. 

Where did you find the service record - I have FindMyPast and Ancestry?

The service record is on FindMyPast. If it helps William Hart married Alice Gardner 1904 Tiverton ( she is born 1881 Tiverton ).

This family just don't want to be found in the censuses!

It now looks as if they were in Sampford Peverell , Tiverton, Devonshire in 1906 and the family consisted of:

So where are they in 1891 and 1901?

Which fits with the Elizabeth Sarah.

However, I'm a bit worried about it being John P Gardner when he was definitely John Henry Bertie.
