That the OP's ancestor came from Macroom town.

Just a possibility that the 'screen' bit (and variant spellings) originally evolved from Scrín, meaning shrine, there are other known examples in Ireland.

For example, up in Co. Londonderry, Ballynascreen - Baile na scríne (genitive) - the 'town of the shrine':

BTW, there's lots of interesting history below confirming that the Macroom area was a focus for pre and post Christian worship, also that Bealick Mill was from 'Bealach Leachta' (bealach - there's that word again), an ancient route used by local saints.

I therefore quite like the notion of the 'way to the shrine'. Maybe someone living in / near Macroom will post here one day to clarify.
