« on: Sunday 02 October 16 16:06 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help with any old photographs of Bedminster Down, especially any of the Cross Hands Pub, my relatives the Hall family ran the Pub for over 100 years. The only picture i have seen is a painting. I hope someone can help in this search.
Thanks, David

Hi David,

You could try Paul Townsend's flickr site - "brizzle born and bred" or possibly the Facebook group, Bristol, then and now, which both have large numbers of old photos by area,

That's the one, Carol.

It's still there, and a well-known landmark.

Actually no I didn't!

I tended to drink in pubs with skittle alleys - I was playing skittles 3 times a week, in and around Bristol!

Apparently, there is a water colour of the Cross Hands, which was displayed by The Malago Society?

1880-1889: Sarah Ann Jones, at The Spotted Horse, corner of West St and Sheene Lane & Albert Rd.

The painting of the Spotted Horse shown at the beginning, was commissioned by Sarah during her tenure, well sort of!

It seems that sometime around 1884 she provided accommodation for a travelling German artist, who consequently couldn’t pay his bill. She demanded a watercolour painting of the pub as payment. The picture is not signed or dated unfortunately but this story is retold by a Mrs.Trickey of Ashton (in the Malago, historical magazine), who was the granddaughter of Sarah Jones.

It seems she was pleased with the result, as she touted him around to other licensees to paint their pubs as well.

The Cross Hands at Bedminster Down was definitely among them as it has been displayed in exhibits by the Malago Society (Mr Anton Bantock).

Hi David
The Cross Hands is my local, and I am sure that there is an old photo, maybe two, on the walls inside the pub. I will have a look next time I'm in there, and if there is, I will work out a way to obtain a copy.
