Thomas HOOK birth - missing from register?????

1871 census date was 2 April, so he would have been (just) still 9 as the 1871 entry says; not yet 10.

1862 is of course just a computer-inferred approx birthdate for indexing purposes - it does not appear on the census itself.

Where would the original parish register be to check for possible entry of William's occupation in the 1861 baptism? And check Caroline's name; cannot find a suitable marriage or deaths for the parents.

No one appears to have mentioned that until 1875 the onus was on the Registrar to go out and record births in their district, hence a number of births  went unrecorded. It was from  1875 that it became the responsibility of the parents, or someone presant at the birth to go and register the event, even then a few escaped the net.

Alternative the birth may have been registered in the mother's maiden name
if they were not married at the time.

The parish entry for Thomas's baptism shows his father William's as a Store Keeper.

Good find, Jebber; so as far as the minister knew William & Caroline were married & there has been no transcription error to the BTs.

Probably, yes, the birth missed by the registrar. But the couple missed on the 1861 census as well  Abode South Lowestoft.

ADDED: Familysearch shows baptisms of a Frances Elizabeth Hook 23 May 1858 & Margaret Hook 6 Feb 1859 to a William & Caroline Hook in Woodbridge St John's, Suffolk. Can't find the images. Margaret's birth appears on GRO index 1859 Q1 Woodbridge  4a 671. No GRO ref for Frances. May not be the same family of course, but can they be found on 1861 census?

I can't find them in 1861, but a widowed Caroline is  with Margaret, and two  more daughters Susannah and Ada in  Whittaker Street, St George Hanover Square in 1871.

Ada was baptised at  St Paul, Wilton Place, Knightsbridge, by which time William was dead.

The Norfolk News of 9 June 1866 has a report of a Caroline Hook widow with 4 young children fraudulently seeking relief in St Faiths'; her husband had died on March 1 after an accident at work  [brewers Combe, Delafield & Co] in London 3 weeks before. She had been given some money then asked for more having either spent or lost the first amount. She had some to Norfolk to live with her father in Frettenham. May or not be same Caroline.

ADDED: Ah, so Ada being born 1868 means the Caroline Hook in the paper above is not the same one as Thomas's mother.
