1901 Thomas William Mills alias Rushent
« on: Tuesday 11 October 16 10:59 BST (UK) »
Thomas William was born in 1882 in Walthamstow Essex to a Jane Rushent  and enlisted at Reading in July 1901. I am looking to see where Thomas William lived in the 1901 census taken just before he enlisted. His occupation at the time of his enlistment is recorded as a hotel servant. His main family lived in Great Bedwyn Wiltshire and it is possible that he was lodging with them. Their names were Rushent and he may have been recorded as Thomas William Rushent.

In 1911 he would have been in the army. He saw service in Gibraltar, Egypt, India and France. Reported missing in October 1914 and confirmed as Prisoner of War, 30 July 1915.

I would greatly appreciate help in finding this person.

Many thanks

Graham

Did he enlist as Mills or Rushent?

1901 has a Thomas Mills b 1882 Wiston in Colchester Barracks.  Nothing under Rushent

His army Pension records have him as William Thomas Mills alias Rushent and he gives p.o.b. as Gt Bedwyn Wilts

So possibly he could be under any combination of those names in census

Thanks Suz.

It looks likely that record you have found is the person I am looking for.

The place of birth differs but the Rushent family mainly come from Great Bedwyn and his mother and close relatives all lived there.

What other details does the pension record?

Many thanks

In outline:
Served 1901-1909, in the reserve (ie back in civilian life with a liability to be recalled) 1909-1913, served 1913-1919, posted missing Oct 1914, confirmed as POW Jul 1915, next entry is at the depot Jan 1918, to reserve Jun 1918, discharged Feb 1919 no longer fit.

Gives names of father Frank and mother Jane in Shalbourne Berks and brothers and sisters   Wife Beatrice nee Niblett address in Cardiff married 26 Feb 18.

He is not with father etc in 1911 in Shalbourne.  He was in the reserve 09-13 so would expect to find him working somewhere.

Thanks Suz, I think we found him together but I was faffing around interpreting the records.

Graham - have you seen his POW records which among other things record him suffering from epilepsy in 1917 and subsequently being repatriated via Switzerland, Holland and Tooting Military hospital in Jan 1918?
