Thanks Annie for your reply.  I think Grover should maybe read Grocer but he is also a Spirit Merchant so when he emigrated he became a Tavern Keeper.

Thanks
Betty

Thanks Dod for your reply and brilliant research information.

It is certainly looking like Robert may have emigrated with the Simpson family.  Or he joined them.

Your time is much appreciated.

This family research takes over your life!!

I have found an entry on IGI a marriage for a James Sutherland marrying Anna Simpson.

James being son of Donald Sutherland and Jane Boddy.

The Anna is I believe a cousin to Robert Simpson. Her parents are Alexander Simpson and Anna Mellis.
According to a newspaper entry in Canada Robert was brought up by Anna's parents in Inverness before emigrating to Newmarket, Canada in 1855.

Little steps at what I am wanting to prove but I am making progress.

Thanks all
Betty

Hello,
Found James & Anna Sutherland on the 1911 Canadian Census Return. Anna's mother is with them.
The Enumerator has used his own short forms for Surnames, add in the usual transcription errors, result is one confusing mess!

1911 Census. (as transcribed). Prospect Ave., Newmarket, York North, Ontario.
James Sutherld 61 Head born Ontario, July 1850. Occupation: ? In Store.
     Anna          "      62 Wife     "         "        March 1851?
Anno Simavn     91 Mother-in-Law, Widow born Scotland, Oct.1820. (Looks like Anna Simson)
Foset Sutherld   31 Dau-in-Law, Widow born Ontario, June 1880.

     Also this death.
Anne Simpson, Widow, died at Gorham St., Newmarket, York, Ontario on 13th June 1912 age 92yrs. Date of Birth: 15th Oct.,1820 Scotland. Father: James Mellis. Mother: Penelope Adams.

Birth date on the DC ties in with birth date given on both 1901 & 1911 Census Returns.

               Regards,     Dod.

Brilliant Dod.
I would never have found the 1911 census. I think the daughter in law may be the wife of Donald Mellis Sutherland.  He died in 1908.  Her name is christina Fawcett Cochrane.  The person on the census may be her.

I think I have found all the other censuses of interest

Apart from Robert Simpson, store owner and Penelope Cochenour I have not found any grave stones.
There is a death for an Alexander Simpson having died on 5th February 1875.  There  is nothing to indicate it is the correct Alexander.

At least we have confirmed the relationship between Robert Simpson storeowner, and the Sutherland family.

Now to prove or disprove a family story that my husband's family has a connection to Robert Simpson.

Thanks again for your time.
