Somersgill family on 1861 census - or not
« on: Thursday 20 October 16 03:00 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Richard Somersgill was born in Ripon, Yorks, around 1809, according to the 1851 census.
In 1834 he married Elizabeth Tattersall in Manchester, Lancs.
Their first two children, Robert and John William, were born in Manchester, 1836 & 1839.
In 1841 their son Richard is born in Harrogate and the family appears on the census there.
By 1843 their daughter Ann is born in Liverpool, according to the following census.
In 1846 their son William is born in Liverpool.
The family appears in the 1851 census at Temple Building, Liverpool (which I believe is on/near Dale St).
Son William married in 1866 in Walton, Lancs.
Richard died in 1870 in Everton.

It seems that after a bit of back and forth the family settled in Liverpool (and the name morphed into Summersgill) and I suspect that in 1861 they would have been in Liverpool but I can't find them on the census. Neither can I find them on the Yorks census for that year.
Can anyone help?

They have been transcribed as Sowergill on the 1861 and Richard has been recorded as Robert.

Thank you, Mo! Wrong first name and wrong surname - that would explain why I was having difficulties ;D

Ah, thank you. That sorts out another question since I had both Whitefield and Whiteford Streets on different records. The two streets are at right angles to each other.

Interesting that a current Ancestry user had posted a correction to that "Robert Sowergill" transcription a couple of years ago, correcting it to Richard Somergill (without the middle "s"). You might want to contact her.

Hi I posted the correction but have no relationship with the family at all - I was simply tracing a Summersgill family for someone else and looked at this entry as it came up in my search and I could see it had been mistranscribed so submitted the correction.

Name variants I have found are Summersgill/Summergill/Summerskill/Somersgill/Somergill which might help in future searches.

Sorry I can be of no further help.

Hi, Pheno. Good to know it's a clear case of mistranscription.

Back again, Pheno. I see that the family you were tracing is my own direct line, Jane Fletcher Gibson and Henry Summersgill being my greatgrandparents. Is there any way you could put me in touch with the person you were assisting or is that against the rules?
