Sidney Street, Bristol
« on: Saturday 22 October 16 09:28 BST (UK) »
I am struggling to find Sidney Street in the parish of St Philip & St. Jacob, Bristol on a map for dates between 1886 and 1901.

On the 1939 register the street before it is given as Goodhind Street and the one after as Sidney Place.  Not sure how the roads were listed in 1939 so not sure how accurate it is.

Can anyone help with a map for this street please?  It doesn't appear to exist on today's map.

It was near the junction of Stapleton Road and Claremont Street, and was in fact a turning off Russell Street not Goodhind Street. From the maps on Bristol: know your place, ( http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace ) it seems to have been built between 1855 and 1874, survived the Blitz but later demolished and a tower block now stands on the site

I'm feeling a bit of a dimwit today.  I just can't get the hang of how to use the link that you gave me Old Bristolian.

Can you tell me how I can find Sidney/Sydney Street on this website please? (The dimwit's guide!)

Click on the '+' sign next to 'Addresses' (top left).
Enter the street name in the search box, and click on 'Search'.

A list of house addresses will show, and a pin will appear on the map.

Change the map by using the list on the right-hand side.

I searched for Russell Street.
On the 1949 map, Sydney Street and Sydney Place are under the "& J" of "St Philip & Jacob".

If it helps you can see Sydney Street on this town plan https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/360356/173994/13/100204 change the zoom level. If you keep zooming out you will get the modern street map

Hi K

Finally found it!  No red flag came up for me but I did find it under the J.  Looks like the paper has been slightly creased, runs off Russell Street.

Right so that probably means that Greenbank Cemetery would have been the nearest place for any burials of the family.

Trying to find the 11th child of George Thomas and Elizabeth White who must have been born and died in between census records.  I know all about the ones that are on the census records.  Trouble is Elizabeth had children between 1873 and 1895 and I have no name for this child.

I'm basically looking for a needle in a haystack!!

Oh right thanks for that Stan.  Can now see where it was in relation to the modern day map which is very useful.

Don't dismiss Arno's Vale Cemetery?

FindMyPast have Bristol burial records - might be worth checking there?
