Birfit appears in the 1861 census as a place-name in Ripley Parish, see RG 9 / 3206 / 10 / 13

Immediately before it are Scarah Moor Farm, Broxholm and Scarah Mill.

Close you can see Birthwaite (as already suggested). I'd say Burfit and Birthwaite are more than likely one and the same.
