Victoria: Charles SANSOM, born c1828, Devon
« on: Sunday 23 October 16 20:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,

A lady correspondent from Victoria has asked me to research an "Exile" Charles SANSOM, who arrived in Port Phillip (Geelong) aboard the "Joseph Somes" on 24/09/1847 and was immediately employed by McMillan & Wilson of Geelong.  There are two possible further references to him in Victoria:

(1)  During 1877 he was in the Geelong Infirmary & Benevolent Asylum; and

(2):  He was fined for unlawful assault at the Kilmore Police Court on 10/11/1892.

He was born in Uplyme, Axminster, Devon, in 1828, the son of Thomas and Ann Sansom (nee BEER), brothers/sisters, Isaac, Anna and Maria and was eventually transported for 7 years, having been sentenced on 02/01/1844.

Can anyone help with some details for him please.

Thank you and for the moment,

BAC3

He is easily found on the 1841 census in Uplyme with Thomas and Ann.  There seems to be a big age gap between Thomas and Ann with Thomas' age given as 70 and Ann giving her age as 35 (obviously rounded as per 1841 census guidance, but even so - still a big age gap, so possible 2nd marriage for Thomas)

Potentially, might have been first arrested and found guilty in 1840 (aged 12  :o ) of larceny and sentenced to 6 weeks and twice whipped

Thank you

You will find the Baptismal Record confirms that Thomas and Ann were his parents.

His first sentence was at the Devon County Sessions 30/06/1840, aged 12, for Larceny

How do you know the one in 1892 is the one you are looking for?

I wonder whether your Ann Beer and Charles Beer born approx 1810 are siblings?  Charles married Merina Young and their son Charles married Dinah Wilkins (in Greenwich).  Dinah's mother was Mary Sansom (thought to be the daughter of Henry Sansom and Mary).  From the 1841 census Charles Beer may have had a brother called Isaac.

The Devon/Dorset border has moved back and forth and you may find family in Dorset as well as Devon.

Can I ask what records say Ann's maiden name was Beer?
