Elizabeth HITT Mystery
« on: Friday 28 October 16 00:41 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out more about a woman named Elizabeth HITT but have hit a dead end.  According to her death entry in the SSDI Elizabeth was born on 15th Sep 1907 in New York and she died in Sep 1976 in Jamaica, Queens, New York under the name Elizabeth Schramm.  I cannot find a birth to match her and I cannot find her on the 1910, 1920 or 1930 US Census returns either.

She apparently married an Anthony Chicchetti in the late 1920s but again I can find no sign of this.  They had two children and I have found her on the 1940 census as Betty Chicchetti with her two children.  I believe that only weeks after the 1940 census she gave birth to a son the first of six children with a Harold Schramm who was living as a lodger on the same street in 1940.  Again she apparently married Harold but I have no details of that.  I've concentrated on trying to find her on the 1930 census with her eldest child Muriel, who was born in 1928, as I thought that should be the easiest one to find her on but I just can't find them at all.

On two of her children's death entries her name is given as Elizabeth M Hitt and I've also seen it as Elizabeth Ann Hitt.

Any help greatly appreciated as she is such a mystery at the moment.  Thanks.

I'm just wondering if you might be better off getting your topic moved to the United States board.  I did have a go but my knowledge of USA websites is very limited and I didn't find anything.

If you would like to move it click on the Report to Moderator in blue at the bottom right hand corner in your comments box and ask for it to be moved.

Thanks Girl Guide - I wasn't sure initially if the US board or the Common Room would be better but I think you're right and it's been moved now to the US board.

Thanks CaroleW but I've checked Elise Hitt and she's definitely someone else.

It's a real mystery this one  :(

The only other thought I had was that Elizabeth Hitt was perhaps an Americanised version of a foreign name

Hi Carole - I've been thinking the same thing.  I thought the 1930 census might be the easiest one to find her on and that might lead me to earlier ones but I can't pick out any Elizabeths/Bettys of the right age with a 1-2 year old Muriel that would fit.  I do think Elizabeth Hitt likely wasn't her original name so it's very tough.

That's another mystery Carole - I have a suspicion that it wasn't.

I see there was a 5yr age gap between the children plus no husband which made me wonder if Muriel was born under a different surname.
