Ship: HMS or SS Venpluce
« on: Friday 28 October 16 12:16 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was at the landing of Gallipoli (Navy) and in his diary he mentions a ship he saw called either HMS pr SS Venpluce .  I can find no other reference to this ship - Any suggestions?  Maybe he misspelt it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I guess it could be Vengeance but still want to look more as so far in his diary he has been pretty acurate about details.  He was a cook - probably down below - maybe someone said there goes the HMS or SS ????? and he misheard!
Thanks for the feedback

I had thought it might be the Vengeance as well.

Is the handwriting difficult to read?

Perhaps the snippet concerned could be scanned and put on here? Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes, - etc?

Romilly.

Thanks Romilly, Maureen NY & Shaun J. for your contributions.  I must get hold of the diary again and take another look myself - my grandfathers handwriting is usually not too bad to read - so Ill take another look.  thanks again

Have just re-looked at the original diary and it says: "30th May, 1915 Rather cold today thousands of troops arriving as usual, ships company went to divine service on HMS Venpluce"
I have scanned many posts etc. but cannot find any reference to a ship called "Venpluce"  Two days before on the 28th he mentions HMS Venerable (he also mentions lots of other ships in the diary and they all are traceable)  This is a great mystery.
On another tack is there any information on Divine Services held on ships etc.. Chaplain notes etc.
The writing definitely doesn't say Vengeance.  As the ships company went on board you would have thought he would have got the name right.  I believe there were approx. 200 ships at Gallipoli does anyone know of a complete list?  Thanks in anticipation

I posted a link to the warship list in reply#2. Here it is again:

Thanks everyone who replied.  I think we have now come to the conclusion that my grandfather spelt it wrong - we believe it was the Vengeance.
