I could order the marriage certificate, but this family member is quite far removed so I don't want to pay the extortionate prices they charge for certificates now for every distant member.

Have you seen the 1911 for George? Who is the housekeeper?

Also, the 1901 shows a very strange "daughter" with him.

I'm wondering where you get her second name from?   Was it from her death certificate?   If so, it would seem the informant got it wrong.

On last census she is living with George as Eliza C. Cristie his housekeeper although her age is wrong - single and born in Essex.   

She marries as Eliza C. Christie and dies as Eliza C. Stupple.

Believe I have found her birth having found her with parents on census born Takeley, Essex but second name is not Christine:

Eliza Charlotte Christy birth June 1867 Dunmow (district which covered Takeley).

Her birthdate is said to be 15/4/1867 which ties in with the birth entry above.
