Fantastic!  Thank you all very much
So let me see if I have this right.
Mary ? married ? Lomas, who died young.  They had daughters Mary Ann (m. John Cocker) and Hannah (my direct ancestor).
Then Mary Lomas marred Joseph Twibell in 1819 and had two more children, (Austin) William 1820 and Selina 1822.  Joseph presumably died soon after as I can't see any more children and by 1841 Mary is a widow.
Can I be cheeky and ask if anyone can see Mary's marriage to Mr. Lomas?   ;D
Thanks again

This is a vague possibility - however daughter Mary Ann could be the wrong age?

ancestry trees have Joseph Twibell dying in 1839 - there is such a death on the GRO registers for a 58 year old

There are a number of trees on Ancestry with a Joseph Twibell marrying Mary Lomas in Sheffield on 1 Feb 1819 - but with no evidence attached

Hi just to confirm at marriage Joseph was a Batchelor, Mary a Widow

Yes, that fits with the first child I have found for them born in 1829.

Their daughter Hannah and her daughter Hannah have caused me a lot of trouble since they swapped between Hannah and Ann apparently when they felt like it.

Thank you for finding the Mary Terry lead, Mabel, it looks worth pursuing.  Perhaps Mary Ann was not baptised straight away.  Selina  wasn't baptised till she was in her teens.

Have you found these details on FindMyPast? I have been using the Sheffield Indexes but there are still a lot of gaps in their records, which seems to be why I haven't found them.

Again, many thanks to all

Bev

I was thinking the Mary Ann Lomas baptism in 1806 was too early, given she's born c1808 on the 1851 census and 1807-11 on 1841. I suppose it's  not unusual for names to be reused in short succession

Ah right, I see what you mean.
Still, it's not impossible.
At the moment I can't see any other candidates.
I've found Mary Lomas on a tree on TribalPages but unfortunately the tree only shows her 2nd marriage to Joseph Twibell, no mention of the first :(
