This is a bit dry, but also tells of the slum areas:  http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/leics/vol4

And if you want to find the streets on maps, try here:  http://www.oldmapsonline.org/en/Leicester#bbox=-1.1470170000000053,52.61507799999999,-1.1270170001110955,52.65507800000001&q=&date_from=0&date_to=9999&scale_from=&scale_to=

There are some Ordnance Survey maps on there, and old fire insurance maps, which are more detailed - sometimes they even include the numbers of the dwellings.  You need to sit and pore over them to find the right street, but that is an interesting way to spend your time anyway!

The Ned Newitt book you can get online from the huge retailer that Jeremy Clarkson likes these days, and there are lots of other Leicester history books on there too.
