Missing children Bowker family Roeburndale/Wray area
« on: Tuesday 15 November 16 18:01 GMT (UK) »
Henry Bowker was born in 1832 in Burton-in-Lonsdale. He married Margaret Baines in 1855 in Dent, Yorks. I have Henry and Margaret in census returns from 1841 through to 1911 which states 10 living children born to the marriage, 3 still living. The living children were
James Oct/Dec 1856 Sedbergh 9A p5 (born Dent according to census data)
Sarah Jane July/Sept 1859 Sedbergh 9A p6 (also born Dent)
Margaret Alice July/Sept 1867 Lancaster 8E p648 (born Botton, Lancs)
Censu returns show the couple at Woodses Farm in Deepdale Dent in 1861, from there they move to Broad Wood, Wray with Botton, Lunesdale by 1871, 1881 they are at Gamblesholme, Tatham and 1891 to 1911 Outhwaite Farm, Roeburndale
I have never found records for the 'missing' children  and thought the new GRO searchable indices would help. I have found one of the missing seven
Dorothy July/Sept 1871 Lunesdale 8E p699
All four of these records show Baines (or a variation) as MMN
My problem is that I can find no birth, baptism, death or burial records for the other six children, a rather large number to lose!
If anyone can help with suggestions i would appreciate the help.
Christine :)

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75.  If the children were born living but died almost immediately, their births may not have been registered

Thanks for the input CaroleW, Hhmm this is what I am beginning to think, added to that they were a farming family living in relatively isolated places. I was hoping there would be some baptism or burial records for some of them but again have had no success locating anything

My maternal grandmother was born 25.1.1877 and I have her baptismal record which has her full date of birth on it.    Her younger and older siblings births were all registered but there is no birth reg for my grandmother.  I even had a search by the GRO but no luck
