Originally I read it as 2 Hope Street too.

I wonder if anyone has access to the parish burial records.  They don't often give many details in burial entries but it might mention her parents.

I can't see another suitable Lydia KING.

Thanks, bearkat. Just ordered the death certificate so I shall post here when it arrives and what it tells us!

Well the death has now arrived and it shows this is the right Lydia King and her age at death is in fact 16 months.

Interestingly though, the address on the burial (2 Hope Street) is different to the address on the death certificate (28 Rose Street, Mile Town).

Lydia's father was therefore indeed a shipwright in Sheerness in between working in the docks at Woolwich and Rotherhithe. He also went back with his family to Yarmouth for a time as well.

Lydia's cause of death was 'Morbilli Certified' which is in fact measles.

I know know thanks to the GRO mother's maiden index that Francis and Emma King has nine children as opposed to the six I knew about:

Francis William 'Frank' King 1867–1918
Lydia King 1869–1870
Herbert King 1870–1902
Walter Samuel King 1872–1902
Edith 'Ede' King/Bassett 1876–?
Alice King 1878–1879
Alice King/Wicken 1880–1959
Emma King/Sibley/Hull 1882–1964
Edward King 1885–1886

It means a third of their children died in infancy and in fact Francis King outlived six of his nine children.

I wonder if anyone knows of any studies or articles on historic attitudes to infant mortality and children predeceasing their children?

Thanks for all your help with my query though, everyone.

Jon

Interesting death certificate (we often neglect them).  Just shows that the census is just a snippet of time.

Victorian death rates were shocking.
