Currie or Watson in Eaglesham
« on: Sunday 20 November 16 11:50 GMT (UK) »
John Currie died 15 Oct 1854 in Eaglesham aged 73. His birth place in 1841 and 1851 census is Eaglesham,Renfrewshire.

Havent been able to find confirmation. He married twice, Elizabeth Fulton in 1801 and Anne Crawford later in 1830's.

Anyone out there can confirm his birth place?

John, with John Currie's death pre 1855 might be difficult to find further details for him. Sometimes though you can get some clues by going sideways...

There is a Robert Currie, a peer to John. Could he be a brother? From 1851:

Robert Currie 66 Baron Officer b. Eaglesham
Elizabeth Currie 50
Susan Currie 38
Robert Currie 33
Janet R Currie 16
Hugh Currie 13

Address: Polnoon St 31, Eaglesham

John and wife Ann showed next door at No.30 that year didn't they. John's occupation given then as spirit dealer public house.

If Robert died post 1855, you might get further clues re potential parents to John?

Monica  :)

PS: what is the reference to Watson?

John married Elizabeth 06 Nov 1803 and Anne in 19 Feb 1830.

There were three families of Currie's in Eaglesham, but your John may not have been baptised well at least not in the Established Church.

There was considerable upheaval within the church at this time re the appointment of Thomas Clark as Minister, so much so a large portion of the membership broke off and established their own church. You can see its effects of this in the records.  For example, there are only 3 recorded Currie births between 1770-1790 and only 272 births were recorded for everyone in the entire Parish.  You might find his baptism in the non conformist records held in Edinburgh.

However, John might be the son of Robert Currie and Jean Hamilton who married in 1770. I mention this as one of John's children was named Hamilton and I spotted a daughter named Jean but there is no way to prove this connection only speculation.  You can try matching the birth of the children to see if it follows the Scot's naming pattern which might add support to this speculation.

Thanks all for posting.

I think Robert Currie and wife who married in 1770 are the right parents - but unproven at the moment.

Robert Currie, the next door neighbour in 1851 sounds like a brother to me. I think his parents name could be given on death certificate. I wonder if he is stiil alive in 1861?

thanks for this. I am fairly sure these are the right folks. In fact I think, these Currie brothers married Fulton sisters back in the early 1800's
