Help with identifying age of photo
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 23:33 GMT (UK) »
The two men in this photo are my great great uncles. I am trying to date the photo and if possible trying to identify the badge that the man on the left is wearing.

Hello & welcome Alex the Lion.
The man is wearing the SWB=Silver War Badge.
It was awarded to men who had served during WW1 & had been discharged through injury or sickness.
They became surplus to requirements after 1919.
The general dress styles of the women indicate late war.
So I would suggest 1917-19.
Give the man's name & I'll look him up.

Purlin,

They are two couples. The two gents are brothers and both sat with their respective wives.

Jim1,

Thanks. That's brilliant. The name of the gent on the left with the badge i am not 100% sure. There were 3 brothers in all. The gent on the right is Arthur Albert Elliott (b. 1878), the one on the left we think is Frederick George Elliott (b. 1886) or it could be the 3rd brother Henry Alfred Elliott (b. 1881)

Thanks in advance,

Alex

A close match is 394189 Rfn. Frederick George Elliott 9/London Regt.
Attested 13/11/16 & discharged (wounds) 5/2/19 aged 32 so right age & date.
He was overseas (France) from 4/2/17 - 13/7/18.
He probably received his wound just prior to returning to the UK.
His original number was 8393 & his Battalion was called 1/9th (County of London) Bn, The London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles).
All of the London Batts. were TF & renumbered in 1917. His Batt. was within the block 390001 to 420000 & based on when they joined.
His new number 394189 gives an attestation date of Nov. 1916 which is consistent with the above info.
The 1/9th. became the 9th. Batt. London Regt. in 1918.
Unfortunately no service/pension records survive but he looks the most likely candidate.

Thanks again Jim,

That's a great bit of information to add to my family tree. Is this information very difficult to search? Thinking I could see if the other two brothers served in the Great War as well.

What you need is a service or pension record as this gives the extra info such as next of kin, address etc. so you know you have the right man.
Unfortunately about 70% were destroyed in WW2 so the chances of finding one is quite slim.
Those that survived are on Ancestry.

If you want to know more about Frederick's war you need to download the 2 war diaries for the 1/9 Battalion London Regiment:
The 1st. diary is at the top of the list & the 2nd. one is 2nd. from the bottom.
