HELP in trying to trace Irish ancestors please
« on: Tuesday 06 December 16 18:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I've been stuck on this line for years and have just decided to have another crack at it

My ancestor was Mary Lenord   (Leonard, Lenard, Laon) born 1837 in Wolverhampton.  She married John Russon in 1860 in Birmingham and fathers name was Thomas, Bricklayer.   In 1861 census she is living at Stour St Birmingham with husband and her widowed mother, Ellen, and siblings

1861 RG9 / 2132 Smarts buildings, Stour Street, Ladywood Birmingham

John Russon Head aged 34 Ivory Button maker b Birmingham
Russon Mary wife aged 24 b Wolverhampton
Ellen Lenord aged 42 Mother-in-law widow b County Carey Ireland
Jane Lenord sister in law aged 22 mar Stay maker b  ditto
John Lenord Brother in law aged 18 b Count Carey Ireland labourer
Joseph Lenord  Brother in law aged 8 b Birmingham Errand Boy
Emily Lenard sister in law aged 3 b Birmingham
Catherine Brady Lodger  aged 6 mths b Birmingham

The two youngest children who were born in Birmingham, their birth reg gives mothers maiden name as Fahy

I can’t find Ellen in 1871 or 1881, but she turns up again in 1891 in Birmingham aged 75 and gives her birthplace as County Galway and is living with unmarried daughter Emily

So what I am looking for is –

Where were Thomas Leonard, Ellen and children in 1841 & 1851
Is there are marriage for a Thomas Leonard & Ellen Fahy c 1836
Where was Ellen in 1871 & 1881?

Or anything else that anyone can find about the family or point me in the right direction as to where to look.

Thanks very much
Carol

County Carey is most likely to be County Kerry.

The Great Famine in Ireland took place between 1845 and 1852.

I suspect that the family were still in Ireland during those terrible times?

Hi Carol, in trying to reduce the quantity of locations possible i found:-

1851Griffith's Valuation
The Leonard in Co Kerry in 1851 appear to be equally focused in the civil parishes of  Lisselton and Listowel when produced from its quick index see http://www.failteromhat.com/post1845.php  [Griffiths in under census etc]
1   Aghanagran Middle   Aghavallen
2   Ballyheige      Ballyheige
1   Dreenagh      Ballyheige
2   Chapel Lane      Castleisland
1   Old Market Lane   Killarney
2   Barnadarrig      Killehenny
8   Lacka East      Lisselton
1   Loughanes      Lisselton
1   Ballygowloge   Listowel
1   Clievragh      Listowel
2   Gortacrossane   Listowel

1   Listowel      Listowel
2   The Square,      Listowel
1   Kilbaha       South   Murher
1   Boherboy      Ratass
1   Denny St.      Tralee

1825/6 Tithe Applotment Books
Whereas the earlier Leonard in Co Kerry in 1825/6 appears to be more focused in the civil parish of Listowel when produced from Tithe Applotment Books see http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/  However the represenation is much more limited
1   Clonmore      Caher
1   Cloonmore      Caher
1   Carran         Kilcummin
1   Ballybunnion      Killehenny
1   Killikinny      Killehenny
1   West Gortagrane   Lisselton
1   Ballygalouge      Listowel
1   Cleeverogh Upper   Listowel

1   Cunaghatussane   Listowel
1   Gurlcurreen      Listowel
2   Inch the Castle   Listowel
1   Town Fields      Listowel
the spelling of townlands has changed but just identifiable?

So my next step would be try church records if they exist for Lacka East in Lisselton, followed by Ballygowloge, Clievragh & Gortacrossane in Listowel if you havent tried that way already

Good luck onwards

Thank you so much for that information.  No I hadn't got her second marriage which is why I couldn't find her in 1871 / 1881.  I wonder if it's the wrong person I've found in 1891.  More investigating to be done.

Thanks again
Carol
