from the 'bombs' or 'grenades' on the tunic collar would say Royal Artillery, although Royal Engineers have similar bombs. Only difference being number of plumes.

Good evening,

The cut away skirts on the tunic make him a member of a Scottish regt. The collar badges mean that most likely the regt is the Royal Sots Fusiliers.

Added, forgot to mention the tartan trews as well.

I agree with John, [apart from 'Sots'!!!] the trews being my main clue.  The three chevrons show his rank as sergeant.  Infantry sergeants wore the red sash.  No medals.
The uniform appears to be 'Patrol', similar to the later No. 1 dress, unusual in wartime but probably retained from pre-1939 service.

Thank you all for your help.  The trousers do not show as tartan on original picture but on the scan?
Have not yet searched for his WW2 record so will bear these facts in mind.

Do you have the marriage certificate?  It may say his occupation is "Sergeant in -------  "if you are lucky.

No I have not splashed out yet on a marriage certificate. But it has triggered a memory of my mothers that he had a cap with some sort of tassel and she remembers the Tartan trousers.  Mum was a bridesmaid at his  wedding.

Hi, unfortunately can't help with the uniform but this is my Grandad. I stumbled upon your thread as I am doing some family history research myself. Maybe you would get in touch with me please?
