Thomas Mawson - 1741 Will Lookup Please?
« on: Sunday 18 December 16 22:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I hope it's okay to put this in another topic, it does filter on from http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=761167.0 on my ancestor Phoebe Morson from Cottingham area.

sugarbakers very kindly found a marriage & potential parents in Thomas and Phoebe Mawson/Mauson/occasionally-transcribed-Manson from Wilbarston. Unfortunately the BT's from 1712-1719 are missing, which is around the time my Phoebe was probably born.

However I've seen that Thomas has a will. I'm hoping if someone is heading to the NRO if they would be so kind as to please give the will a quick squiz to see if Phoebe is mentioned. I'd be eternally grateful! :) She has been a mystery for too long!

If no one can look at the will for you, you can order the microfilm to a familysearch centre near to you.

From the Northants burial index cd

Thomas MAWSON a Quaker buried at Finedon 10th June 1740

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know it was on microfilm. I live out in the country in Australia, and the nearest one that I can see (that has microfilm circulation privileges) is quite far from me :(

Thank you for that burial :)

This looks like his wife's burial, and that looks good with regards his will ... he can't have simply left his estate to his wife, so hopefully he will have mentioned his children.

Phoebe Mauson buried 1734 Mar 8 Wilbarston CofE
(Northants Burial Index)

If no one looks at the will beforehand, I'll try and get to NRO after the holiday.

Here are the bones of the will. I've sent a PM with a detailed summary to kelzies.

Thomas Mauson the Elder of Wilbarston mason
Elizabeth, his wife and executrix
Nathaniel, his son
William, his son
Hannah, his daughter
Mary Bullivant, his daughter
Robert, his son
Phebe, his daughter
Thomas, his son
John, his grandson
Thomas & William Pooley, trustees for land sale
Two houses, barn, yard, ground with barn, land
Dated 29 Jan 1738
Witnesses: Henry Merrill, Jane Merrill, Francis Jannells
Proved 30 March 1741
(A Peterborough will, so original available)

No death/burial for Thomas c1741. (There was a separate Northampton will for Thomas of Finedon 1740)

It would appear Thomas married a second time ...
Thomas Mauson = Elizabeth Clark 1732 Feb 1 Wilbarston
... though this doesn't tie in with Phebe's burial 1734

Appears that son Thomas continued the business as a mason. There's a Marriage Licence for Thomas Morson of Wilbarston mason = Sarah Newbourn of Stoke Dry 12 Nov 1753. Bondsmen T M & Wm Burditt of Pipewell graziers.

Spelling in Wilbarston regs/BTs ... MaUson 1707-1756, MORson from 1757, with just two MaWson 1762, 1763.

Thank you very much yet again! :D

Just on Thomas Mauson's second marriage, maybe that was his son? Since it doesn't fit with Phebe 1st's death. Did just find someone's list of 1735/6 marriages in Market Harborough and in it was:

Thomas Mauson of Wilbarston and Elizabeth Newett of this parish were married January 22.

Yes, it's on Northants Stray Marriages.

That makes a lot more sense. Good find.
