Steeple Claydon, A Buckinghamshire Village Before And After Enclosure

In a talk first given last summer at our Aylesbury venue, Julian Hunt will contrast the early eighteenth-century private enclosure of Addington, a closed village, with that of Steeple Claydon, a neighbouring  and much larger open village, enclosed by Act of Parliament at the end of the century.  Julian will consider the personalities behind each, including members of the Verney, Busby and Hubbard families, and will show how enclosure dramatically affected people’s lives at all levels of society.
