Wilson / Graham Marriage - Middlebie
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Good evening

I'm researching my 2 x Great Grandparents, George Wilson and Eliza(beth) Graham(e). George was born in Canonbie c 1826 and Eliza was born in Middlebie on 8th Sept 1828.

On their son, Andrew's Birth Certificate (below), it shows details of his parents' marriage (column 5), which to me looks like "1848 Dec at Middlebie".

Unfortunately, I can't find any other formal record to corroborate this, which is making me doubt its accuracy?

Does anyone have access to marriage records for Middlebie who could perhaps check for this marriage in 1848?

Any other thoughts / advice to help trace this marriage would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

David

Hi, David,

I can’t find a marriage, but other records seem to suggest it could be true.

Censuses (from ancestry):
1851, living at Thorniewatts, Canonbie, were George, 25, Ag Lab, Elizabeth, 23, and Elizabeth, 1.
1861, at Nittyholm, Canonbie, George, 35, Ag Lab, Elizath, 33, Mary, 9, Agnes, 4, Thomas, 2.
1871, at Hairlaw Garden, Canonbie, George, 44, Limestone Quarry Man, Eliza, 43, Thomas, 12, Margaret, 8, Ellen, 4, Andrew, 1.
1881, at Harelaw Garden, Canonbie, Elesabeth, 57, Thomas, 22, Andrew, 12, George, 9.

Births/baptisms (from Familysearch):
Birth 6 Aug 1849 Elizabeth to George Wilson and Eliza Graham at Canonbie;
Bpt 29 May 1854 Agnes to GW and Elizabeth Graham at Canonbie;
Birth 9 Jul 1856 Agnes to GW and Elizabeth Graham;
Birth 2 Sep 1858 Thomas to GW and Eliza Grahame at Canonbie;
24 Jun 1868 Andrew to GW and Eliza Graham at Canonbie;
5 Sep 1871 George to GW and Eliza Graham at Canonbie.

(Couldn’t see births for Mary, Margaret or Ellen.)

Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Peter

Yes, the family certainly have strong ties to this area and the dates of the children support a 1848 wedding. Eliza was born in Middlebie, so everything does seem to fit.

I just wonder if the on-line Middlebie marriage records aren't complete becauae I've tried searching all over and can't seem to find anything.

Thanks again

David

According to the National Records of Scotland website there are no extant marriage registers for Middlebie for the period you are looking at. The only marriage registers held are for the period 1744 to 1787. Perhaps they were lost or destroyed.

Thanks Isobel... if that is the case then it would certainly explain why I can't find them.

Maybe I will just have to accept what I have as the best evidence available.
