Di Verbania in Piemonte ?
jcmac

That looks promising, and similar to my interpretation of the letters.

We also need to keep in mind that the spellings of these place names are an interpretation by a Scottish man of something said by an Italian speaker, so differences are likely.

I'm trying to imagine the names being said in a broken English accent i.e. it could be either?

I have never been to Italy so I will enjoy my 'google' tour  ;)

I see the first one as Castlenuovo - so maybe Castelnuovo?

Thanks everyone,

I was having trouble myself deciphering & thought it best to leave it to others & I can now find out if those areas are close in proximity.

My next task will be the surnames of which there are 5 to find out if they're closely acquainted?

As an aside, I note "Ice Cream" and "Largs" mentioned.  May I enquire if these folk were connected with the famous ice-cream parlour of "Nardini's" situated in Largs, Ayrshire, which still trades to this day?

Not that has been determined so far, but you never know. Do you know whereabouts in Italy the Nardini family came from?*

* Tuscany I believe

Both places from the census appear to be in Piedmonte?

(Is Piemonte and Piedmonte the same? :-\ )
