Walter RIDDLE
« on: Saturday 24 December 16 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Walter RIDDLE was born c1829 in Chiddingfold, Surrey, the son of William and Harriet RIDDLE. He was baptised in Chiddingfold on 12 July 1829.

In 1841, he was living with his parents aged 12 in Chiddingfold. In 1851, he was a lodger aged 21 with the PAGE family in Chiddingfold, working as an agricultural labourer. He then disappears from the record.

At one time I thought I had found him, when I found a record for another Walter Riddle who joined the Grenadier Guards in 1855. This particular fellow it turns out was born in Shere, Surrey in Nov 1836 to Richard and Elizabeth RIDDLE. In 1841 and 1851, he was living in Shere with his parents, aged 4 and 14. He appears in the 1861 and 1871 army lists, before being discharged in 1876. He subsequently turns up in 1891 as a Chelsea Pensioner int he Royal Hospital, where his marital status is recorded as single. I believe he died in Chelsea in 1903.

There is a record of a Walter Riddle, married to Ann, in the 1881 census living in Ebury Square, London. This Walter is aged 44, so is probably the one born in Shere, despite the 1891 census describing him as single.

Just to complicate matters there is another Walter Riddle born c1831 in Marylebone, who married Ellen Sarah WELD in 1883. I believe that this Walter, who is clearly "higher born" than my Walter, died in Islington in 1899.

Any help in locating my Walter after 1851 would be much appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone had any further thoughts on what happened to Walter RIDDLE post the 1851 census, as I have still to find anything about him post that date.

As far as I know, the information in the first post is still correct.

Looks like you are right  :)
Probable marriage to Annie Maria Buddle at St Martins in the Fields in 1876.  It names Walters father as Richard Riddle occ Paper maker.

I am revisiting what happened to Walter, as I do periodically. I just wondered if anyone had any new insights. He clearly didn't die in childhood, so I would have expected him to have surfaced somewhere after 1851.

I think we can rule 8319 out, see my first post.

725 and 3031 are certainly worth pursuing, as is 3448. Though in my experience this will not be easy.

Agreed can rule out 8319 - had identified him as the "born Shere" Riddle.
Unfortunately the Worldwide Army index (often confused as the Census) frequently lacks the key details of age and PoB.

As you say it ain't gonna be easy.
