Whitten / Wo(o)lsey
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 06:17 GMT (UK) »
I believe I am descended from John Whitten and Sarah Wolsey who were married on July 1858 in Mullaghbrack Parish Church.
Does anyone have any information on either family?

There was at least one other son- William born 1869 Belfast.

Marriage extract lists both fathers- Robert Whitten & George Woolsey
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGZS-ZZK
The certificate will eventually be available on Irish Genealogy website (free)

? Will mentions a son John-
The Will of Robert Whitten late of Cargans in the County of Armagh Farmer deceased who died 2 January 1865 at same place was proved at Armagh by the oath of Robert Bennett of Cargans aforesaid Farmer one of the Executors.

Location of Cargans (adjoining Mullabrack townland)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Possibly several other children born between the 1858 marriage and 1863 (pre-civil registration).

A 24 year old son Robert Whitten was married to a Violet Dornan in 1883:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1883/10946/8000568.pdf

Another son George Whitten was married to a Mary Dawson in 1885:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1885/10855/5963713.pdf

Just a possibility to note, until it can be ruled in or out, of a marriage for son William Whitten to a Mary Ann Torrans in 1894:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1894/10576/5852994.pdf

Likewise a possibility of a marriage for daughter Sarah Whitten to a William Duke in 1898:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1898/10423/5795220.pdf

And a John Alexander Whitten married a Margaret Allely in 1915, again a possibility:

The address given for both John Whitten and Sarah Wolsey at the time of their marriage in 1858 was Marlacoo (presumably ... Beg or More in Mullaghbrack parish), the occupation of the groom's father (Robert) was given as mason, the bride's father (George) was a farmer.  A Robert Whitten born on 27 March 1859 was baptised in Clare Presbyterian Church on 1 May that year, parents were John Whitten and Sarah Wolsey of Marlacoo.

Griffiths Valuation shows a Robert Whitten in Marlacoo More, the print date was 1863.

Now into speculative territory, a Robert Whitten given as  born on 14 December 1832 was baptised in Clare Presbyterian Church on 16 January 1833, the parents were Robert Whitten and May Ann McMaghin of Marlacoo.

Edited to add:

Also, a Robert Whitten of Marlacoo, the son of Robert Whitten a stonemason, married a Susan Willis of Marlacoo (father William a farmer) in Ahorey Presbyterian Church on 27 December 1855, maybe a brother of John.

There was also a marriage on 22 December 1853 in Mullabrack Church of Ireland of an Isabella Whitten of Marlacoo to a Charles Houston, her father was given as Robert Whitten, a mason.

And a marriage on 8 December 1862 in Mullabrack Church of Ireland of an Alice Whitten of Marlacoo to a Joseph McClean, her father was given as Robert Whitten, a mason.

And a marriage on 6 April 1863 in Ahorey Presbyterian Church of a William  Whitten of Marlacoo to a Caroline Walker, his father was given as Robert Whitten, a stone mason.

And a marriage on 6 April 1864 in Ahorey Presbyterian Church of a James Whitten of Marlacoo to a Sarah Jane Wylie, his father was given as Robert Whitten, a stone mason.

There's clearly a cluster of Whittens (and Wolseys/Woolseys) in the more general area (eg. go look at the 1901 and 1911 censuses and PRONI Will Calendars), however two indicators for your Whitten line so far are the location Marlacoo and the occupation stonemason.
