Occupation on marriage certificate Post Boy?
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 12:34 GMT (UK) »
As in the title, any thoughts on the groom's occupation? I initially thought Part Boy but now erring towards Post Boy. Thomas was a coachman four years later so the horse theme may tie in with post boy?
Thanks
Christine

From Oxford Dictionaries online:

'historical
1  A boy who carries and delivers post; a boy or man who rides express, changing horses at intervals, to deliver letters, dispatches, etc. (now historical). Hence occasionally: a bringer of news; frequently as the title of a newspaper or periodical.
2  The postilion of a stagecoach, post-chaise, or hired carriage. Compare postilion.'

So looks as though Thomas got himself promoted!

It looks like GS has got it right although it does look like part rather than post.

I think it looks like Past, but I'm sure it must be Post.  :)

Thank you all, the anglicisation of postillion to post boy makes sense, I was thinking he delivered the post, possibly on horseback. I may have a better chance of finding him in the 1841 census, assuming he was in that line of work at that time he may not have been in Preston on census night.
Thanks again  :)
