John William Mason of Kegworth
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 14:54 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my husbands great-grandfather.
John William Mason (William), husband of Annie Gallagher, died in an accident in 1940 aged about 68. His address at the time was 28 Ashby Road, Kegworth -I have a newspaper report about the accident. He was a labourer when he died but had been a mail driver from Packington Hill, Kegworth, in 1917 according to his army papers.
In 1911 (his place of birth is given as Coalville, Leicester in 1882) he is with his wife and children in Borowell Kegworth but I can't find him before this other than his 1904 wedding (I don't have the certificate) and am unable to find William or Annie in 1939.
My mother-in-law remembers visiting him on Ashby Road and thinks she remembers his mother- Granny Spare, who had remarried hence the different name, living on Packington Hill and showing her William (her grandfather) in his coffin.
I would love to find William or Annie or Granny Spare in 1939 or William and his mother in an earlier census. I hope this isn't too confusing.

Hi,

On John William's probate record his address is given as 28 Ashby Road, Kegworth. He died 26 November 1940 in The Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.
Administration to Annie Mason.

William is there in '39 but doesn't show in the index.

Leave names blank and enter Kegworth in 'Place Keywords' and Ashby Road in 'Street'. You should find him by browsing the images.

David

Correction - he does show in the index - Castle Donington R.D. Leicestershire

Thanks for that. It was reported in the paper because the ambulance took over 2 hours to arrive, but I think he was too badly injured to survive anyway.

And I have just found William and Annie in 1939 on Ashby Road. Thanks for your advice on how to search.

What era would 'Granny Spare' be living at Packington Hill?

Granny 'Spare' was at Packington Hill when William died, so in 1940. My mil was quite convinced that her grandfather had died some years later as she remembers (Great) Granny Spare showing her inside the coffin and didn't think it was possible anyone would show a 4year old a deceased person. I am positive the 1940 death is correct though as this is the correct address.

Spurr definitely could be thought of as Spare by a young child. I'll see if I can find a Spurr/ Mason marriage.
