census age to tally with appropriate birth date and name of parents.

Do you have her parents names or is that what you are trying to find?

1851 has 4 entries all b Aberdare

1838 - with grandmother Mary Davies
1838 - parents John & Sarah
1841 - a servant - not with parents
1844 - parents Eustace and Jane

If she married - you need her marriage cert to see if she names a father

1841 does not show specific birthplaces  and none in 1861 meet your birthyear criteria

Thankyou for your assistance. What I have is that my great grandparents were William Morgan (harpist) and Mary Richards . Only in the 1871 census have I located the family all together . Their 1st son William was born in Merthyr Tydfil about 1863-66 so looked for a marriage about that time. Have purchased 4 marriage certificates for a marriage of William and Mary none say William was a harpist , maybe he took it up after he married.. So knowing the names of the father of each of the Mary Richards  I can see if any tie up with any on the marriage certificates which you located for me. Maybe this will help me. Or they might have never married Again thank you for your help. Regards Eirwen

I noticed that the surname Richard appears a lot in the Welsh censuses so looked for Mary as Mary Richard and found an 1851 entry for one b 1841 Aberdare - parents William & Dinah.  William was a coalminer

The 1871 census has William Jr as aged 6 & born Merthyr and I was going to suggest obtaining his birth certificate to see what was listed then as fathers occupation as that will have been closer to the marriage date, but there is no William Morgan born Merthyr 1863-1867 with the MMN Richards.  The closest are as below:

MORGAN, WILLIAM      MMN RICHARDS
GRO Reference: 1865  J Quarter in MACHYNLLETH  Volume 11B  Page 214

MORGAN, WILLIAM  JOHN      MMN RICHARDS
GRO Reference: 1864  S Quarter in CARDIFF  Volume 11A  Page 226

If neither of these are the William from the census then could either William or Mary have been married previously? If so then their marriage may be later than the dates you've been looking, ie nearer John's birth.

Do you have a birth certificate for any of their other children confirming Mary's maiden name as Richards, or is this taken from the GRO reference for the birth of John Morgan?  If its the latter then it may be worth obtaining this certificate to confirm William's occupation at that time and to see Mary had a former married surname.

Hi

? Are we talking about this 1871 family . . . . .

RG10 / 5406 / 16 / page23
 18, Minors Row, Aberdare

 William Morgan 25 Miner
 Mary 37
 Margaret 18
 David
 Thomas
 Sarah
 Benjamin
 Elizabeth
 William 6
 Anne 3
 Mary 7mo

Would make William (snr) 7 years old when Margaret born (etc).

Would you(anyone) confirm references?
Saves an awful lot of duplicated effort.

We have a number of "Richards" in Aberdare and surrounds area.

Oh yes, Happy New Year!  :)
