Looking for Weaver's horse drawn cabs in Wolverhampton.
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 17:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I was told anecdotally that there was a small company of horse drawn cabs, known as Weavers and run by Edward Weaver (known as Ned Weaver) in the very late 1800s and early 1900s, in Wolverhampton. I can't seem to find any reference to it anywhere. I just wondered if anyone knows anything of it please?

Many Thanks.

Hi Glen,

That's extremely kind of you. Please only do so if / when it's convenient and you are already making the trip for yourself. I wouldn't want to put you to any trouble or to take up your time.

I wasn't looking for a groom. Silly me. I think this is because I have an ancestor in the north east of England who was a groom and he looked after horses for a family. He was in service. I now see that it's more of a broad term.

Thank you so much.

Hello SarahEliza

Rather earlier than you wanted but thought it might be worth mentioning.  In Pigot's 1835 Commercial Directory for Wolverhampton there is a Samuel Weaver who, in Walsall Street, is Agent to Pickford & Co.  They were carriers to Bridgnorth and intermediate places from their wharf, Horseley field, every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday morning.

If you'd like to see what other Weavers were up to commercially in Wolverhampton at that time they are detailed on my website.   Under Weaver, scroll down to Staffordshire.

P.S. I've also indexed several commercial directories for other Counties 1828-1835 for my own use.
