Groom,
This is getting quite frantic, and very exciting!
Missed your post initially, but Q.E.D's the link between the husband and the wife, that that marriage must be the correct one.
I was also under the impression that David SHEPHERD had passed away by 1879 or 1880, but that info is quite obviously incorrect!

1881 address - Rhiw Sanders

By 1891 Diana is still recorded as married. 1901 records her as a widow.

...and now Mabel - this is becoming quite incredible, the speed of it all...
The new information you have provided does in fact fit in perfectly with a Mary Ann Eizabeth STAGG, whose marriage I discovered earlier today to a William STAGG; she was a Mary Ann Elizabeth SHEPHERD, daughter of David SHEPHERD "steward" and they married on 4th October 1882 at All Soul's Hampstead.  Had thought that this marriage was probably wishful thinking, so far from Wales, but I think it looks pretty much cast iron now.
What fun this all is, and thank you SO much all you good Rootschatters who have responded with such positive results in such a short space of time.
I'm also a bit out of puff, and my cheeks feel quite hot with it all!

JJ...
Just about catching up with my tail here, but that does suggest therefore that David SHEPHERD may well have passed away between 1891 and 1901, then...

You just beat me to it!

William Stagg was a marine insurance clerk - 10 Leander Rd was his home. his wife Mary Ann Elizabeth was born Brecon

William Stagg - 23, father Thomas Stagg, merchant
Mary Ann Elizabeth Shepherd - 25, father David Shepherd, steward
Marriage -    4 Oct 1882, All Souls, Hampstead

Emily Shepherd was one of the witnesses.

Think this confirms the 1920 death as your Diana

Mabel,
...and the midwife information that you have also unearthed should provide much more with a bit more delving into their records.
There is a letter somewhere in the family to "My Dear Lizzie", unfortunately with no date on it, but it is definitely written by her mother, who's discussing the writing of her will.  So the letter may well have been written some time before 1920, much later than I had imagined.  Though of course people do compose wills well before they in fact die, especially if they become quite unwell..
Many, many thanks again, for all this detective work!
