"baptised by permission of ---"
« on: Saturday 07 January 17 18:32 GMT (UK) »
I'm going through 18th century parish records for the local church, which is an extraparochial place. This church was owned by the local bigwigs, the Pegge Burnells. On a couple of baptism records it says, "By permission of Peter Pegge Burnell" -- who would have been the owner of the church at the time. The annotations only appear by the name of one particular family who I believe lived in a village about a mile away which did not have its own church but fell within a different parish. However I know there were other families using the local church and living in the same village but whose baptisms are not annotated in this way.

So my questions are - has anyone else come across this sort of annotation? And why would someone need permission to have their child baptised in their local church?

The thread title talks of Marriage?
The body text talks of baptisms?

Which is it? ;D

Which Church is this? Is it Peter Pegge-Burnell of Winkburn Hall?

In the 17th century the tower and nave of the abbey buildings  were restored by the Pegge family to serve as a family chapel which is why  the permission of Peter Pegge Burnell would be needed. Apparently the church is not owned by the Church of England.

I could understand that if all the baptisms there had this annotation, but it's only a couple.

Interesting! Do you think they might have waived payment for that particular family? (I'm assuming there was some sort of fee.)

It could be a "stranger" Baptism ie. someone other than an estate worker.
Someone who had recently moved to the village but didn't work for the family.
