Rev. Dr. GADSBY
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 15:16 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor who died (1836) whilst in the congregation of the Rev. Dr. GADSBY.   The newspaper account says that he had previously preached at the Chapel in Church Street but following a disagreement had moved to the Devonshire Rooms in Devonshire Place in Brighton.   I can't find any other mention of him in the papers and wonder if anyone has heard of him and perhaps knows what denomination he was and what the disagreement was about.

Thank you.

Hi ShaunJ

Thank you for that link.   It says he was pastor in Manchester from 1805 until he died in 1844 and I need my man to be based in Brighton for several years before 1836 so I suspect it must be another man.   The surname is unusual enough to suggest it could have been a son maybe so I will see what more I can find now that I have a possible starting point.   My ancestor was buried in Hanover Chapel Burial Ground in Brighton.   Do you know if that would be a Baptist cemetery?

Regards,

Diana

A son of Rev William Gadsby - a Mr John Gadsby - did live for a while in Brighton, where he died in 1893 aged 84.  However, his obituary indicates that he was a printer and author, rather than a minister of religion.

A minor point, but the 13 Sep 1836 report in the Brighton Patriot which mentions the death and burial of Mr Mussell (your ancestor?) has the minister as the Rev Mr Gadsby, rather than the Rev Dr Gadsby.

Hi avm228

Many thanks for your replies and the correction.   Yes, that's the right newspaper article although they got the surname slightly wrong.   It was actually MUZZELL, which is how he was buried, and the dates and other info tie in with him being one man rather than two.   I hope that doesn't sound too garbled!

To be honest, I think it probably was William Gadsby who was in Brighton.  It was common for nonconformist ministers to travel even if they had a "home" congregation, and indeed his short Wiki profile, linked to by ShaunJ, describes him as a "planter" - i.e. someone who established multiple congregations.

Perhaps his son John's later residence in Brighton was prompted by some enduring family connection there.

Hi avm228

Yes, I think you are right.   I can't find anyone else who would fit in the slightest.

Thank you very much for you help.
