Out of interest there's another Edward Savage marriage - same place St Marys Portsea - but earlier on 22 Jun 1847 to Eleanor Jane Tait.

Could be the same Edward and he was widowed before marrying Harriet.  If only certificates were free and we could look at all this stuff!

Maybe not - Eleanor Jane Savage death Portsea Sep 1860 age 38.

Though the genuki page gives useful background info and pointers to where records maybe found, the information for individuals is taken from the census entries rather than 'official' coastguard records.

This information for Edward and his family comes from the 1861 census entry.

According to the official CG record Edward died on 22 Feb 1862 while stationed at Newton CGS, Berwick (ADM 175/7 pdf 578). The same records, but not the same page, show he was nominated to the CG service from HMS Frolic on 7th Nov 1851 (ADM 175/7 pdf 574).

As an aside, and this will not appear in the CG records, Edward was one of the 2600 Coastguards who saw active service during the Crimean War, serving on HMS Monarch and HMS Orion, for which he received the Baltic Medal.

If you have access to FindMyPast have a look at the merchant seaman's records, because these also include serving Coastguards and can provide much useful information.

In addition to the above he has a service record ADM 29/66/177, this shows he first served on HMS Powerful in 1840, as a Boy, and received the Naval General Service Medal with 'Syria' clasp.

ancestry has a page in Naval officer and rating service records 1802-1919.

as Martin says first entry is for HMS Powerful 13 Jun 1840 age 19.

Character good or very good throughout which is always nice to know.

I wonder if he was the Edward married to Eleanor Jane because she is alone in 1851 but down as wife and married.  Pity it doesn't say coastguards wife.

There also seems to be a naval record for his son George Edward on Acy. (His character doesn'T seem to have been quite as good :'(.).
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all again for the help you are all giving me.

This all started because I have the Baltic medal for Harriet's second husband, Henry Tye Beasley and we wanted to know more about him and Harriet.

I haven't ever used the Genuki site before so I have learnt about another new source there. I did have a quick look for Henry on it but he doesn't appear to be listed.

It's interesting that Edward was also a former Navy man and had the same medal, I wonder if they served together? I'm also going to have a look at the records for his son George and see if I can find the 10th child mentioned earlier.

Thank you all again for the help,

Michael
