Is this her Dad?  If so getting a copy of the Will may reveal something if Katherine is a beneficiary

Probate index entry:

Charles Augustus Tanner of Marsh cottage New Cheriton Hampshire died 18 Aug 1852 Administration (with will)  to MAry JAne Tanner widow and William Charles TAnner carpenter

The fact that it is Administration (with Will) suggests that the executors named in the Will were unable or unwilling to act, thus administration was granted to people other than the executors named in the Will.

I have traced back past Charles Augustus on Ancestry. The family are fairly stationary around cheriton so have appeared on the census lists there.

How would I find out if Charles Augustus had left a will?

The family are all servants and workers and are unlikely to have left anything of value. Would it be likely that they had even made a will? I do not know how common it was then?

Yes, that would probably be him.

Or possibly his son Charles William (listed on death as William Charles!).

Following up from your explanation earlier -

the Katherine Sharpe does indeed look more hopeful than at first thought, because here is her death with the middle name of Sarah:

Katherine SARAH Sharpe
Oct 1988
Croydon
ref 11 1657
Age 91
dob 12 Nov 1896

Now Katherine Sarah Tanner's birth :
Oct/Nov/Dec 1896
Arlesford
2c 168

which is the right quarter for a birth on 12th Nov.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Birth certificate arrived for Maurice  :)

Parents John Smith Sharpe and Katherine Sarah Tanner.
I don't know if smith is a middle name or surname as they name is three separate words in a column on the certificate. I think it is a middle name.

So it looks like the right people.
Nowif I could just find out what happened to Maurice and his brother....
