From riches to rags - John Kirby Picard
« on: Wednesday 11 January 17 21:55 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out more detail on John Kirby Picard, who died in Hull (Sculcoates) in 1843.  His death was registered in the September quarter.  He had an extraordinary career, inheriting the Hull Lead Works, issuing loads of trade tokens, many of which you can still find today, and making a fortune.  But he lost it all gambling in London.  The brief biographies I can find online say that he died 3 days after being awarded a room in the Hull Charterhouse and before taking residence.  We have no record of his name, but that doesn't mean much.
If anyone can come up with some information, particularly a date of death, we'd be very grateful.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

The new GRO facility will give you his age when he died but unless there is an online resource available you would need to buy his death cert to establish his exact death date

There is a very brief mention of John in the Hull Packet newspaper of 20 January 1843 which refers to him as a deputy Recorder of Hull.

The same paper dated 25 August 1843 refers to the auction of John's lead works etc., as lately occupied by the late John Kirby Picard.

So you know that he died before 25th August 1843.
