Cousins Removed relationship
« on: Tuesday 17 January 17 11:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Could someone please tell me if these two relationships are the same-

3rd Cousin 3 times removed

and

2nd cousin 4 times removed.

If they are the same relationship, which one would normally be used?

Thanks

They are not the same -
As per here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin#/media/File:Canon_law_relationship_chart.svg

3rd Cousin 3 times removed
5x great grandchild & 2x great grandchild to common ancestor

2nd cousin 4 times removed.
5x great grandchild & great grandchild to common ancestor

So with the 2nd cousin 4 times removed (one of them would be a parent to the 3rd cousin 3 times removed one above)
Nolan, Cremins & O'Connor - County Kerry, Ireland.
Keogh - Queen's County (Laois)
Stack - Limerick & Clare

They can't be the same, because each generation removed means they are on a different generation line, so have to be different people.

No, these are two different relationships.

First cousins are related through a grandparent
Second cousins through a great-grandparent
Third cousins through a great great grandparent
Fourth cousins through a great great great grandparent

The "removed" bit refers to whether the two individuals are from the same generation or not.

So, your first cousin's children are your first cousins once removed.   The common ancestors are your grandparents, which still makes you each others' first cousins, but you are a generation apart.

Your children and your cousin's children will be second cousins, because their common ancestor is a great-grandparent.

So, for the first of your complicated examples.

3rd Cousin 3 times removed

John Smith has two great great grandchildren (not siblings), William Smith and Edward Smith. William and Edward are third cousins.

If Edward has children, they are William's third cousins once removed. Edward's great grand-children are William's third cousins three times removed

No, they are different. The first number indicates the number of levels you travel from you up the tree to reach an antecedent you have in common, and the 2nd number tells you the number of levels you count back down to reach your distant cousin.

Thus:
Your first cousin is the offspring of your parent's sibling (your Aunt/ Uncle). That first cousin's grand children are therefore your first cousins twice removed.
However, your second cousin is the offspring of your grandparent's sibling (your Great-Aunt or -Uncle), and the offspring of that second cousin is your 2nd cousin once removed.

I have first cousins three times removed who are newly arrived in the world. My third cousins once removed, if I had ever met them, are highly unlikely to still be alive as they would be loosely contemporary with my grandmother (who would by now be 112 and counting).

Does that make sense?
