Isabella Lamont from Glasgow

Hi can someone please help me, I am trying to find a shipping list for Isabella Lamont she was from Glasgow. Have no idea when she was born or who her parents were. She must of been young when she left Scotland with her parents to settle in South Africa. Some time before 1811, for this is when she got married in South Africa to  a James Ross.

Also Looking for James Ross when he came to South Africa, all it say in the newspaper marriage list  that he was from Scotland.

Hi Karytay,

Unfortunately you may be hard pressed to find any passenger records for this time as the British government did not document emigrants leaving its shores until the Passenger Vessels Act of 1803. Even then, records were incomplete.

Do you have the death records for Isabella or James? If you knew their ages at death or perhaps which part of Scotland they came it would help to narrow down dates of birth, parent's names etc.

I know it's hard when there is very little to go on so we shall keep looking!

No I do not have there death notices. If they died before 1834 the Archives here in South Africa will not have their death records.

For their marriage I found only an extract from -  Extracts of marriages at the Cape of Good Hope, 1806-1821 (1920) Botha, Colin Graham, 1883-; The Genealogist

Their children I have all there birth and death records. It is only the parents that I am struggling with.

Thursday 22 February 1844 DIED at Port Elizabeth on the 12th instant at the residence of Mr. W. PATTINSON, Isabella ROSS, relict of the late Mr. James ROSS, aged 63 years, deeply regretted by her relations and friends.

Although it doesn't give a date for James' death, it at least indicates that he predeceased her.  Perhaps you can now order a death certificate for Isabella and hopefully it will give you some more clues about her parents!
