The war diary for 5 Siege Battery RGA Sep 1917 records:

Krupp Farm C14 Central  8th.  200 rounds fired on hostile batteries in Poelkapelle area.  No 24224 Gnr Smith OV wounded in action and died of wounds same date.

Thanks for the additional info MaxD.
Have been looking at various records re RGA for when he was in Gibraltar, (he's on the 1911 Census as being there in 'number four company'). I was told when I was young that while there he swam the 'straits of Gibraltar' haven't found any proof of that though but will keep looking !! Cheers, Ashjo.
